Variety has exclusive information that indicates that Joaquin Phoenix has been offered the upcoming Superman vs Batman villain role. The sources who broke this information claim that Phoenix might have been offered the role of Lex Luthor.
This Batman vs Superman villain rumor is the strangest yet. When Bryan Cranston was rumored for the role at the end of his Breaking Bad run, it made sense. He was playing the most despicable character on television and looks like he could step right into the role of Lex Luthor.
However, Joaquin Phoenix has done nothing lately but smaller indie movies, with his last two major roles in the P.T. Anderson drama The Master and the Spike Jonze indie hit Her. Plus, honestly, when thinking of Lex Luthor, Joaquin Phoenix might be the last person to come to mind.
While he looks nothing like what Lex Luthor should look like, the idea of Phoenix appearing in Batman vs Superman is not as unlikely as originally thought. In a recent profile-interview with the L.A. Weekly, Phoenix said:
“I love comedies and I love action movies… I’m sure there were times when I went, ‘Oh, fuck, it’s going to be hard to do the movies that I want to do after this. Am I going to be battling this shit?’ But you’re always battling some shit that you fucking said, so it doesn’t really make a difference.”
That statement was made in an interview that just came out. The fact that the Batman vs Superman villain rumors started at about the same time makes it look like Phoenix would take on a blockbuster role, but I am still not sold on him playing Lex Luthor.
What are your thoughts? Could Joaquin Phoenix play Lex Luthor? Would you like to see him play a different Batman vs Superman villain role, and if so, who? Let us know in the comment section below.
