Back in March, fans of James Bond were profoundly disappointed by the news that Sam Mendes– director of Skyfall– would not return for another round of 007. Well Renegades, I’m happy to report this may not be the case at all. In fact, he might be the front-runner to helm Bond 24.
Mendes previously stated he wasn’t able to return due to other commitments. In the statement, Mendes said, “Directing Skyfall was one of the best experiences of my professional life, but I have theatre and other commitments, including productions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and King Lear, that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond.” What makes this entire scenario possible is the studio’s patience on waiting for Mendes’s schedule to clear. This is great news not just for fans but for the future of the Bond franchise as well.
One takeaway from this news is that it’s obvious MGM understands the dedicated fanbase it has right now. Audiences waited four years for Skyfall as MGM worked out all its bankruptcy issues and it still ranked in a billion dollars in box-office sales. We can wait again if it means another rock solid Bond movie.
