When Marvel announced that the next Avengers movie would be titled Avengers: Age of Ultron, many questions popped up, with the two biggest being whether or not Hank Pym would make an early appearance in the movie and who Vin Diesel would play. The first question was answered by Joss Whedon, and it is slightly disappointing.
In an interview from Comic-Con 2013, Whedon said that Hank Pym will not be Ultron’s creator in the Avengers movie. Honestly, with Pym appearing in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man just a few months later, there doesn’t seem to be a reason to change this – in my opinion – very important part of Ultron’s origin.
However, Whedon feels it is better not to have Pym as the creator and said that Ultron’s origin will be based on the Avengers we have already met. That means that probably he will be (a) a S.H.I.E.L.D. creation gone wild, (b) a Tony Strak creation or (c) something possible from Asgard or Thanos. I can live with the S.H.I.E.L.D. or Iron Man angles, and don’t see why they don’t have Hank Pym as a S.H.I.E.L.D. scientist, even if he is never mentioned by name in the start.
Whedon also said that the movie will be darker than the first, which was honestly a huge adventure story with fun, non-stop action. This one will have to be a bit darker because Ultron is a very dangerous enemy and I have no problem with that. As long as they keep it fun, Whedon has proven to be over the years he can mix fun and dark and still produce something very cool.
Finally, for Jeremy Renner fans, Whedon promised a lot of great Hawkeye action this time around. Renner complained after the first movie that he wasn’t allowed to really be Hawkeye in the first movie because he spent most of it hypnotized. Marvel rumors claimed he was fired for the comments, but those were false and Whedon agrees that Hawkeye was under-utilized in the first film and that will be rectified this time around.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1, 2015.
