Batman Will be Rebooted in New Man of Steel Universe

Justice League movie

DC Comics

The Dark Knight trilogy was one of the most successful superhero franchises of all time. One of the writers for those movies was David S. Goyer, the same man who wrote Man of Steel. One might think that would make The Dark Knight a perfect addition to Superman’s new world. One would be wrong. Goyer said in a recent interview that the next Batman movie will not live in the Dark Knight universe.

It would be disingenuous to say Warner Bros doesn’t hope that this would be the starting point for a shared universe. And Zack has said that Bruce Wayne exists in this universe. It would be a different Bruce Wayne from Chris’ [Nolan] Dark Knight trilogy, and it would be disingenuous to say that Zack and I haven’t had various conversations on set, around ‘what if’ and ‘moving forward’.

I have to say I am happy and disappointed at the same time. I felt that the end of Dark Knight Rises was the perfect conclusion to Bruce Wayne’s story. While I feel like Joseph Gordon Levitt taking over the mantle of Batman would be cool, that is not what this universe needs. This new DC Comics shared universe needs Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne. That means not using the Dark Knight universe.

However, at the same time, I loved those stories and felt Christian Bale was a perfect Batman. I do understand how they need to separate the two, but I also feel that bringing in a new Batman for this world will be hard because people will always compare it to Christopher Nolan’s movies.

If they asked me, a Superman/Batman team-up movie could be a perfect way to introduce Batman to this world. I’d love to see Public Enemies on the big screen in a live-action movie, but that is not the way to go here. Superman and Batman need to not trust each other when they first meet. Honestly, this needs to come before Justice League, or even a Batman movie, to introduce the world to the new Batman.
