According to the actor who plays the character, Agent Coulson’s return will not be a cheat when he appears in the Marvel television series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. As a matter of fact, Gregg said in a recent interview with L.A. Weekly that he would not have agreed to return if it was a cheat.
“When they called, I said, ‘We can’t base the show on a cheat,'” Gregg said. “Joss [Whedon] walked me through what he was thinking, and I thought, ‘Wow. Wow. OK. That works for me.'”
That is great news, although the backlash for the return of Agent Coulson is surprising. After his apparent death in The Avengers, the fan backlash was fierce and a #CoulsonLives campaign started. I honestly never believed he was dead to begin with, and the scene with Nick Fury and the faked Captain America cards was what tipped my hand.
Nick Fury lied about that to get The Avengers to work together to stop the alien invasion. Why wouldn’t he lie about the actual death as well. Plus, S.H.I.E.L.D. has a ton of technology that could have saved Coulson’s life after the Loki attack.
Now, a year later, that idea has been brought up and I have read some writers online calling it a cheat. I disagree completely. It was set up in The Avengers and there is no reason to think it is implausible or unlikely.
Besides, this brings Clark Gregg back to Marvel and that is never a bad thing.
