While Marvel Comics seems intent on wiping out the mutants from their world, Fox is busy building an amazing world of their own with the now expanding X-Men universe. The Avengers may have beat them to the punch, but after X-Men: First Class gave the franchise fresh life, X-Men: Days of Future Past proved that they were back to stay. Now, the spinoffs are starting and they sound amazing.
Deadline just reported today that another spin-off has been announced, and this one is a New Mutants movie. Fox wants Josh Boone, the director of The Fault in Our Stars, to direct it.
“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters,” said producer Simon Kinberg.
I was really hoping for an X-Force movie, but since that team is what the New Mutants became over time, that is still a possibility in the future. For those who don’t read comics, the New Mutants was like the original X-Men, young teenage mutants who are at Xavier’s school, learning to control their powers. The original team included team leader Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot and Wolfsbane. Later, Magik, the sister of Colossus joined.
Later, the New Mutants basically graduated and became X-Force, led by the groundbreaking character Cable. The team consisted of Cannonball, Boom Boom, Domino, Feral, Shatterstar and Warpath. Hopefully, the Fox New Mutants movie will cull the past iterations of the group and choose the most interesting characters to join Cannonball, and hopefully Cable, for the movie.
The New Mutants movie joins X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool. Wolverine 3 and Gambit, as well as a possible X-Force movie down the line. Are you excited about a new generation of mutants in the Fox X-Men universe? Who would you want to see in the movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
