Vertigo’s ‘Lucifer’ Hitting Fox in 2016, Watch Trailer

Lucifer Fox TV series

Shortly after the news hit that NBC officially cancelled Constantine, Deadline reported last Friday that the upcoming Vertigo adapted TV show Lucifer will hit FOX in 2016. The show, which cast Tom Ellis (Merlin) as the Prince of Darkness, is based on the DC Vertigo comic that was itself a spin-off from the excelled Sandman comic series.

While Neil Gaiman created Lucifer in the pages of Sandman, it was Mike Carey who really brought the character to life in his own comic series. For Gaiman, Lucifer was an antagonistic presence to Dream in Sandman, but for Carey, Lucifer was an amazing contrast of characters when he gave up his spot in Hell and settled into life running a piano bar in Los Angeles.

Lucifer is a truly evil character in the comics, but he is also extremely honorable. He will never lie and usually lets his victims fall trap to free-will, where he wins when they give in to their own inner doubt and sins.

Sadly, the TV show seems to be a little more generic. In the Lucifer TV series, Lucifer leaves Hell and heads to Los Angeles where he helps LAPD detective Chloe Dancer (Lauren German) solve crimes and dispense justice. He is attracted to her inherent goodness and wonders if there is a chance for his soul. Also on tap, an angel named Amenadiel (DB Woodside) is sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to Hell.

UPDATED: They just released the first trailer for the Lucifer TV series. From the look of it, it might end up as the procedural, but it looks a little bit different, like Lucifer isn’t really trying to help the police, but actually has some plans of his own. Plus, the scenes between Lucifer and Amenadiel looks pretty cool. I am disappointed that Lucifer doesn’t have blonde hair, but other than that it looks like Constantine (which is a good thing).
