Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up: Exodus Conquers Mockingjay

weekend box office

20th Century Fox

Welcome to this week’s Renegade Weekend Box Office Wrap Up. This weekend saw the new release of the latest Biblical epic, Exodus: Gods and Kings and the Chris Rock comedy Top Five. How did they both do at the box office this weekend? Read on.

As expected, Exodus: Gods and Kings took the box office crown away from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. The Ridley Scott directed epic brought in an estimated $24.5 million at the box office this weekend and it looks like the movie will struggle to become a financial success. With a production budget of $140 million, and the new Hobbit movie coming out next week, Exodus is expected to drop off. Unless the Christian faithful adopt it, changes and all, this will desperately need big International numbers to be a success at all.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 dropped to second place this week with a $13.2 million take. The drop was a 40 percent fall, and after only four weeks, Mockingjay – Part 1 is already the second-highest grossing movie of 2014. Guardians of the Galaxy remain in first and won’t fall before the year ends, but it at least passed Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

DreamWorks Pengions of Madagascar continues to have legs, sitting in third place after three weeks. Any worries that the movie would fail to interest kids because of the over-saturation on television was unfounded. The movie dropped 33 percent and brought in $7.3 million for the weekend.

That was bad news for the Chris Rock comedy, Top Five, who finished in fourth with a $7.2 million take. While that seems low, keep in mind that the movie is on a slow rollout and was only in 979 theaters compared to the 3,503 that Exodus opened in. Only Wild was in fewer theaters out of this week’s Top 10 (116 theaters, $1.5 million).

Next week sees The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies take over the number one spot at the weekend box office, like there will be any doubt. With Annie and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb also coming out, expect a big chance in the rankings next weekend.

Here is a look at the total weekend box office report.
