Just over a week ago, Legendary Pictures officially greenlit the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s ridiculously awesome Pacific Rim and also announced they would be making an animated prequel series as well. Sure, the Pacific Rim sequel won’t be out for another three years (the official date is April 7, 2017) but nevertheless del Toro fans everywhere have been rejoicing.
The director already has fans speculating, thanks in no small part to a recent interview he gave where he said that the sequel would be “very different” from the original including the tone of the film.
“It was hard to create a world that did not come from a comic book, that had its own mythology, so we had to sacrifice many aspects to be able to cram everything in the first movie” del Toro said.
While he was quick to assure fans that Pacific Rim sequel would be as fun and enjoyable as the first, he said that the “tenor of the two movies will be quite different.” I’m not sure what to make of that last statement but since this a sequel I actually want to see (unlike another giant robot film I could name right about now), I will give del Toro the benefit of the doubt.
