Fiendish Flicks W/Ruby LeRouge: ‘The Last Supper’ (1995)
Ruby LeRouge
This week my fiendish friends, I need a good laugh. Okay, I need a good laugh at the misfortune of others, (so sue me) and this week’s flick hits the spot.
Everyone has likely been asked the question, if they had the chance to go back in time and kill Hitler before he took power, would they do it? That’s what The Last Supper is about. 5 friends ask the question, and decide not only could they do it, they will do it. Well, not Hitler, this isn’t science fiction. Played by Cameron Diaz, Ron Eldard, Annabeth Gish, Courtney B. Vance and Jonathan Penner, they start out believing themselves having noble and altruistic intentions, deciding to rid the world of political scumbags and televangelists that pray on the weak and desperate for redemption. To do so they lure those they think the world would be better off without to dinner, where together they play inquisition, asking their potential victims questions to determine if they truly deserve to die. Playing counter to our anti-heroes are some fantastic foes, played by Bill Paxton, Charles Durning, and (a personal favorite) Ron Perlman.
It doesn’t take long til the thrill of playing god takes it’s toll, on their health, on their friendship, and possibly on their very souls. Can you kill a bad man, and remain a good one? This movie asks a lot of interesting moral questions, ones I’ve pondered many times in this life (usually after being forced to watch Fox News). This Fiendish Flick is full of dark laughs, while making you occasionally wonder who you should be rooting for, if anybody. It also teaches you to be very careful the type of fertilizer you use, as you sow, so shall you reap. So, do you think you could be a fair judge, jury and executioner, handing out vigilante justice? I think at the very least I deserve a sterilization ray, then I could make the world a better place for future generations, without the pesky chore of hiding bodies.
That’s it for this week, my treasured little terrors! Same time, same place next week for another dose of dread with yours truly. -Ruby
