The news hit in the last month that Richard Donner was planning on making The Goonies 2, a sequel to the awesome kids on an adventure movie from the 80s. The awesome news at that time was that Donner, who directed the original, wanted all the cast members from that first movie back for the sequel. Even more interesting news came on Monday when Donner said that Steven Spielberg came to him with the Goonies 2 story idea.
Interestingly, it was TMZ that landed the original scoop when they asked Richard Donner what he had in the works and he let them know that The Goonies 2 was coming. The director, who also brought the world The Omen, the original Superman movie, Scrooged and Lethal Weapon, just made a ton of kids from the 80s very happy.
The original Goonies starred a who’s who of child actors of that era including Corey Feldman, Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton, Kerri Green, Jeff Cohen and Jonathan Ke Quan (“Hey, Dr. Jones, no time for love.”). They find a treasure map and head out to find a pirate ship, crossing paths with the villainous Mama Fratelli and her boys, including the monstrous Sloth.
With Anne Ramsey (Mama Fratelli) and John Matuszak (Sloth) no longer with us, the villains might need to be different, although the actors who played the Fratelli boys are still alive (Joey Pants and Robert Davi), so that could work. Of course, it may not have anything to do with the Fratelli clan, but what else would bring the kids together almost 30 years later?
An adventure story of people in their 40s is not as fun as the one involving them as kids, but if Steven Spielberg has the idea for The Goonies 2 story, I am interested in hearing it. If it has to do with the original cast’s children, maybe that could work, but this is something we will have to wait and see on.
As Mikey said, “Goonies never say die!”
