Guardians of the Galxy director James Gunn might have just leaked the Avengers 3 plot. While he did not come out and say it, Gunn said “[Guardians of the Galaxy] is definitely connected to Avengers 3.”
Gunn then went on to tell Entertainment Weekly that Thanos is the “head of the snake” and is someone who is very good at killing people. It is almost easy to say that it looks like Thanos will finally battle The Avengers in the third movie, coming to theaters around 2018.
Of course, when Thanos turned toward the camera in the post-credits of the first Avengers movie, most fans thought that he would be the big bad in the second movie. That was dispelled quickly when Marvel announced that Ultron was the bad guy there. Marvel also signed Thomas Kretschmann to a multi-picture deal to play Baron Von Strucker, but he likely will only be a minimal character in the Avengers team-up movies.
The fact is that Marvel has played out the Infinity Gauntlet storyline through multiple movies, including Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanos was responsible for the devastation in The Avengers and will be the string puller in Guardians of the Galaxy.
With a third Thor movie coming and Doctor Strange joining the fray in Marvel’s Phase 3, there is a lot of room still to add the remaining Infinity Gems and then open up Avengers 3 for Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet, something that would force The Avengers to reach out for help from the Guardians of the Galaxy, and maybe the Nova Corps, for help. This could also bring Captain Marvel into the mix.
That is very coool. Gunn did say that Thanos would be performance captured, which is miles better than pure CGI. Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1, 2014.
