It’s been a couple of years since the Indonesian action thriller The Raid: Redemption was released and now it appears we are close to seeing the film get an American remake. Screen Gems has announced that they have tapped Expendables 3 director Patrick Hughes to shoot the American version this fall. It has also been reported that the studio is eyeing Chris and Liam Hemsworth to play the lead role in The Raid remake.
I suppose I shouldn’t be too surprised that The Raid: Redemption is getting an American treatment. It is after all, one of the most awesome action movies I’ve ever seen so it was only a matter of time before another studio decided to cash in on it.
But why did they have to hire a guy who’s biggest movie credit hasn’t even been released yet? I know this isn’t exactly the first time an American studio has quickly remade a popular foreign film with the most obvious examples being The Departed and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The big difference though is that those movies were directed by Martin Scorsese and David Fincher, two of this generations best directors. They have built long resumes that prove they know what they’re doing. Patrick Hughes on the other hand, I haven’t even really heard of until today.
Maybe he’ll do great but his lack of experience still has me skeptical.
Do you think The Raid: Redemption is a film that should be remade? Should they have hired a more experienced director for The Raid remake? Let us know what you think in the comment section below.
