Starship Troopers Remake Updated By Screenwriter

A couple of years ago, producer Neal Moritz announced his intentions to develop a remake to the 1997 schlock-fest that is Starship Troopers.  Naturally, the news seems to have generally been treated with a collective eye-rolling.  If an interview from one of the Starship Troopers remake screenwriters, Zach Stentz, is to be believed, then the eye-rolling is highly unlikely to stop.

According to Stentz, the audience should expect “less a satire & more an actual adaptation of the Heinlein novel.  An Officer & a Gentleman in power armor.”  In case you aren’t familiar with the Heinlein novel that the original film is very loosely based on, I should warn you that a straight up adaptation is likely going to be lot less fun and more gritty.  After watching the ’97 version I got around to reading the book a couple of years ago and frankly the only adaptation I’ve seen have less to do with the source material was World War Z.

Honestly, no matter what direction they take this, a Starship Troopers remake just seems like a bad idea.  The book itself isn’t exactly a masterpiece with some people even believing that it promotes fascism and while I find the Verhoeven film enjoyable it’s mostly as a guilty pleasure that has only brought us much worse sequels.

Do you think there should be a Starship Troopers remake?  Should it be a faithful adaptation of the book or more like the movie?  Let us know in the comment section below.
