Simon Kinberg To Make X-Men/Fantastic Four Universe for Fox

X-Men and Fantastic Four

According to Slashfilm, Simon Kinberg has just signed a three-year deal with Fox that includes expanding the X-Men and Fantastic Four universes similar to that of The Avengers.

This probably shouldn’t come as much a surprise since Warner Bros. and Sony have been having similar ambitions with their respective properties.  With Warner Bros. adding Wonder Woman to the increasingly crowded Man of Steel sequel and Sony already looking to be building up to a Sinister Six showdown with their Amazing Spider-Man series it was only a matter of time before Fox decided to follow suit.

Fox already seems to be well on their way to their goal since earlier this week, X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer announced on his Twitter page that another sequel titled X-Men: Apocalypse is already in the works and is currently set to be released in May 2016.

While combining the X-Men and Fantastic Four is certainly a nice idea in theory there are a couple elements of this I find to be rather questionable.  For starters, Fantastic Four hasn’t even really gotten off the ground yet so I think Fox might be jumping the gun just a little bit with their plans to build an expensive franchise around them.  Secondly, both the franchises by themselves have had problems in the past developing all their characters partially because there are so many of them (especially X-Men).  It seems like combining the two franchises could quite possibly only exasperate the problem.

Do you think Simon Kinberg is the right choice for the development of this potential franchise?  Do you think the X-Men and Fantastic Four should team up for a movie?  Do you think all the other studios should be so quick to emulate The Avengers example?  Give us your thoughts in the comment section below.
