X-Men: Days of Future Past doesn’t hit theaters until 2014, but Bryan Singer tweeted today that he is already planning out the next movie in the X-Men series. Just like Days of Future Past, the next X-Men movie will also be based on a very popular X-Men storyline – this one X-Men: Apocalypse.

That, quite honestly, kicks some major a$$.

Not only did Bryan Singer announce that X-Men: Apocalypse is coming.

It was also announced that it has a release date: May 27, 2016. The site that released the date said they got the news directly from Fox.

Holy crap, I didn’t see that one coming. This is very cool and I have heard rumors that it will be set up in the  X-Men: Days of Future Past movie as well. Apocalypse is, by far, the most powerful X-Men enemy and has fought the team in various storylines. He is the big bad who has been part of the following:

  • Corrupted an original X-Men, Angel, turning him into Death, the leader of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
  • Cable, the son of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor, was brought back in time originally to the X-Men universe with the sole purpose of killing Apocalypse.
  • The creation of “The Twelve” – 12 people who can team to beat Apocalypse, a group which includes popular characters such as Cyclops, Iceman, Magneto, Storm, Phoenix, Professor X and more.

With all that said, the fact that Bryan Singer is making Days of Future Past as a time travel epic that sees past and future X-Men in their own time frames, there is possibly a chance he could be toying with the idea of Age of Apocalypse, an alternate universe story where Apocalypse conquers the world thanks to Professor X’s son traveling back in time to when Professor X and Magneto were still friends (which would bring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender back into the story).

Professor X dies, causing his son to no longer exist, and a new timeline is created with Magneto never turning evil but losing the war to Apocalypse because Professor X was never alive to stop him.

It might be too confusing for the mass movie going audience, but if they buy into Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse might be a strong possibility.
