Guillermo Del Toro’s Justice League Dark Is Still, Tentatively, A Thing

Justice League Dark

Once upon a time, when Marvel wasn’t so thoroughly dominating DC in the race to bring comic book movies to the mainstream, there were rumors of Guillermo Del Toro leading the weirder end of the charge. The director/nerdgod was slated to direct a film called Justice League Dark. The goal was to bring together the more occult DC heroes in a jambalaya of magic and awesome. Swamp Thing, The Demon, John Constantine, Deadman, and The Spectre, among others, all together in one movie! What more could we want? Well it turns out that is still the plan along with a vastly extended DC universe.

According to Del Toro he and the rest of the creative team are still at work writing and preparing Justice League Dark.

“We’re still on (Justice League Dark), writing, and hopefully it will happen, but there are no developments that are new. It’s still at Warner Bros., they are making plans for the entire DC universe. All the superheroes, all the mythologies, and part of that is Justice League Dark. They’re planning on TV, movies, and all the media, so we have to fit into that plan.”

It sounds like DC is planning to mimic Marvel step for step. If we’ve learned anything in the history of cinema it’s that when someone does something well you should copy it exactly, and that always works. Seriously though, how does DC expect to catch up to Marvel’s big plans when it’s already almost a decade behind.

They just finished their second phase one film (Man Of Steel), while Marvel is beginning work on phase three. There’s one DC TV show, while Marvel has as many as five in the works! Instead of looking to pave their own way, the executives at DC are, once again, behaving ass backwardsly. I really want this to work out, but I fear catastrophe. DC has me expecting the worst.
