Scarlett Johansson Talk Time, Captain America

Most Anticipated Movies for 2014

Scarlett Johansson let Refinery 29 have a peek into the Marvel universe. It’s not a huge peek, and one that almost seems obvious once you know it. It’s a peek nonetheless, and we should be grateful for everything the lady Johansson provides. This is extra true when it’s news about Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This movie is still pretty far away at April 2014. Now we know a few things. The movie is set two years after the events of The Avengers. It will be set in the same, hero era, world as Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. “This film is in real time. It’s been two years since [the characters] appeared, and now both are agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fighting in the streets. We are not superheroes flying side by side. They help each other because we are fighting in a similar way. It’s a working relationship.”

Johansson also hinted that things might get steamy between her Black Widow and the man with the vibranium shield. “By a series of unfortunate encounters, they will be in a situation in which their friendship becomes more intimate. They share many similarities because they live on the defensive without relying on anyone. Also, the two have been working for the government throughout their professional careers. With their friendship they begin to question what they want and what is their true identity.” This also hints that some soul-searching (the most interesting kind of searching) can be expected in the upcoming film.

None of this is very surprising. The last two pieces of news just prove that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is going to hit the same beats as most action movies these days (there’s always a romance no matter how forced, and there’s always some time to think about what it means to be a superhero or unfrozen in the future or whatever). The film being set in “real time” is a little more interesting. It seems like that’s just going to be a constant now. It adds the dimension of a world that is still coming to terms with the presence of superheroes. I like that, but I hope it doesn’t become a major plot component. We’ve already had X-men movies about it, and there are far too few characters for a Marvel Civil War reenactment. All in all, it’s nice to know that the wheels are still turning over at Marvel Studios. What are your predictions? What’s going to be different in a world with superheroes? Might other things carry over from film to film? Whatever your thoughts, let’s talk in the comments.
