With the Summer of 2015 being so crowded, Disney yanked one of their big tent-pole movies from the schedule and pushed it back to 2016. That makes a lot of sense considering that they have three of the tent-pole movies on the docket for that year alone. The Pirates of the Caribbean 5 release date is the one that changed.
Titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Johnny Depp’s next outing as Capt. Jack Sparrow will move to the Summer of 2016, after Disney moved Marvel’s Ant-Man up to where Pirates 5 was supposed to come out.
Disney now has two Marvel movies in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man and Lucas Films’ Star Wars: Episode VII set for their 2015 release schedule. Pixar’s original animated film Inside Out also hits that summer. Also on hand is a new Terminator, Independence Day and Jurassic Park movie.
Disney didn’t mention the crowded year, claiming that they wanted to take their time with Pirates of the Caribbean 5 because they have high expectations for the movie. After Depp’s Lone Ranger movie flopped, both critically and at the box office, Disney knows they need a hit here, especially after the last Pirates movie failed to excite as well.
One promising thing about the movie is that Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are directing the movie after their very impressive indie effort, Kon-Tiki. Moving the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 release date will help give them more time to find their big budget footing.
