It’s official. This summer Showtime will be debuting the eighth and final season of their hit series, Dexter.
One of the first concepts discussed was whether it was planned to wrap up the show in the last two seasons. Nevins had this to say.
“It was always a likely plan; I always said that was likely. I felt like the right timing was to announce it firmly just in advance of its last season. The show has such loyal, passionate and intense fans, and I wanted to handle it the right way. I wanted to leave the possibility that if something changed … but it became clear as we talked between last season and this season that they had an endgame. Once Deb (Carpenter) crossed the line she did when she found out, it was leading to the endgame.”
One of the other topics that THR mentioned was the possibility for a spinoff focusing on Debra Morgan. Nevins replied with this.
All options are on the table as to where it could go after this. There’s nothing actively happening, but you never know what the future holds. We need to get through this season and see how the dust settles and then see where we go from there. I won’t rule it out, but I’m not actively planning anything.
As much as I’ve loved the time I’ve spent with Dexter and the rest of the Miami Metro homicide squad, I have to admit that it’s time for the show to say goodbye. While they’ve provided some incredibly good moments of television over the years, it’s been clear that the quality of the program has been inconsistent. Despite that, it’s a good thing that they’ve been given enough time to really start wrapping things up well. They deserve the chance to provide a great setup for the finale, and it looks like they’ll be giving us something really special.
I was particularly intrigued by the idea of a spinoff focusing on Deb. She’s my single favorite character on the show, even above Dexter himself, and I’m frequently in awe of how great an actress Jennifer Carpenter is. Over the course of the show, Deb has earned my affection and empathy many times and broken my heart more than once. However, I’m not sold on the idea of a spinoff. No matter how the finale of the series affects Dexter, Deb can’t just carry on with her life the way it once was. Especially not after last season’s finale.
Besides, how many successful spinoffs have their been for TV over the years? I can’t think of any offhand.
What do you think about Dexter’s latest seasons? Do you think it’s time to bid the series farewell? What are your thoughts on a Debra Morgan spinoff? Would you watch it if it was made? Why don’t you just tell us what you think in the comments below?
