Joss Whedon Death Will Be Present in The Avengers 2

Joss Whedon just made a lot of fans afraid that their favorite members of the Avengers might not survive the sequel.

Whedon recently appeared at a Q&A in Dublin, Ireland for the European debut of Much Ado About Nothing. While he was there, someone inevitably asked the Geek God about his philosophy for the Avengers sequel. Here was his response, which he allegedly delivered in a creepy voice.

“Death, death and death.”

This could mean that some of the Avengers will inevitably die in their battles against evil. Whedon has no qualms about killing off major characters in any of his works. Two members of the main cast didn’t survive Serenity, Felicia Day was tragically killed in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, and Whedon did have SHIELD Agent Coulson fall in battle, courtesy of Loki in the original Avengers film.

On the other hand, this answer could be a bit more misleading than you’d think. Whedon is known for killing off fan favorite characters, he may not be referring to any of The Avengers themselves getting killed. We already believe that the Avengers will be going up against Thanos for the sequel, since we saw the glimpse of his face in the mid-credits scene. In order to have Thanos, you have to have Death. Not just the activity, mind you, but the character.

In the Marvel Comics Universe, Death is characterized as a cosmic entity that frequently takes the form of a beautiful woman. Thanos’ defining characteristic is his love for Death. Thanos commits horrible genocidal crimes in order to endear himself to Death, and gain her favor. That is why in the pages of the Infinity Gauntlet series, Thanos used the titular Gauntlet to kill half of the Marvel Universe. Since we’ve already seen the Gauntlet itself in Odin’s trophy room in Thor, I think it’s safe to say that this is yet another piece to the puzzle.
