Is a Hellboy 3 movie not in the works? According to comic book creator Mike Mignola, there won’t be a third movie. In the interview, he said that the hardest thing about PR work for Hellboy is that he always has to explain that there won’t be a Hellboy 3 in the series and that it is not meant to be a monthly comic book series.
It sounds like Mignola is tired of answering questions about a Guillermo Del Toro sequel and about his issues not hitting timely every month and just let loose with his frustration.
Hellboy was a fantastic comic book adaptation back in the day when that idea was not as widely expected. Hellboy 2 was a masterwork and stands up with Del Toro’s other output, one of the best comic book movies out there. However, low box office totals and studio indifference has made the third movie just a pipe dream.
Maybe if Guillermo Del Toro can knock people out with Pacific Rim and direct a Justice League: Dark movie that will impress fans, he might get another chance at a Hellboy 3 movie, but if you listen to Mignola, he has little faith in that happening.
Migonola chipped in later on defending his words, and making sure that fans did not think he didn’t want a third movie.
I would be thrilled to see a third one made. I know Ron would like to do it and I think if ANYONE could talk Universal into it it would be del Toro. After #2 someone at the studio assured me that they would NEVER make a third and that was the last contact I had with anyone at Universal. That was a long time ago and things change and I do hope things will change, but who knows. Certainly it all has nothing to do with me. The fate of a third film is entirely somewhere between del Toro and Universal.
Does anyone else want to see a Hellboy 3 movie as much as me? Chime in below.
