Avengers: Infinity War Raises Stakes For Characters

Infinity War

Joe and Anthony Russo directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which remains one of Marvel’s best movies to date. They also directed the upcoming Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. With such a big hand in the upcoming Marvel movie universe, they have a lot of input in where the characters are headed.

Anyone who reads Marvel Comics knows that Civil War was a story that changed a lot of characters. It turned Iron Man and Captain America against each other and changed allegiances forever. It sounds like the movie will also play a large role in turning characters against each other and it might carry over into the next Avengers movie.

According to the Joe Russo, there will be a price to pay for all the characters and those stakes will likely shock audiences.

“That’s the whole point of cumulative storytelling,” Russo said. “We’re going to go on emotional journeys with these characters. We’ve got a lot invested in the emotion. We have a responsibility to be mindful of how these people feel about the characters and, at the same time, we also have a responsibility to carry through on the storytelling. As filmmakers, we believe in stakes. You can’t have good storytelling without strong stakes. So, there will be a price to pay, there will be a price to pay in Civil War. There will be characters who suffer in that movie, and he will come out of that movie and never be the same. And in Infinity War the stakes will be raised to a whole new level. People should expect to be shocked when they see those movies.”

For those who don’t read comics and haven’t really understood the trailers for Captain America: Civil War, the Civil War storyline has the world losing trust in superheroes just running wild and the government wants to take control. Some superheroes like this and others don’t and the government sends those who do out to wrangle in the ones who don’t.

As for Avengers: Infinity War, this story plays out the Thanos story that has been building as the heroes have found different Infinity Gems, all of which could empower Thanos with the ability to destroy the world if all gathered together for him to possess. Id the heroes are torn apart during the Civil War, they will have to work together again to beat Thanos.

Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016 while Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 hits on May 4, 2018 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 follows on May 3, 2019.
