Seems like monster movie season is beginning to pick up. This year, Guillermo Del Toro is set to amaze audience with his creature vs. robots extravaganza Pacific Rim. However, just around the corner is next year’s Godzilla reboot being produced by the great Frank Darabont. With all these giant monster movies being unleashed, one questions the possibility of intersecting universes. Especially since both of these films are distribute by Warner Brothers.
Apparently this is an option even Guillermo Del Toro himself hasn’t dismissed. In fact, he actually loves the idea of a potential crossover. Check out the statement from Del Toro below:
So far with the [Pacific Rim] sequel, what we’re writing, what we’re creating, is very different, so there are no plans. Hypothetically, I would love the fuck out of it. I would love to see a jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain. But I don’t think there are plans on that. I don’t even know what direction they’re taking Godzilla in. I know somewhat that it’s grounded differently. Pacific Rim, my aspiration was, the color, the saturation of color, was almost an acid-drip version of the heavy-metal coloring that I loved when Richard Corben was working there, when [Jean-Claude] Forest was working there. Super bright, super saturated, the crazy color and aesthetic. And Godzilla is more realistic, somewhat. That’s my thinking. That’s what I’ve heard. I don’t even know which way they’re going.
For now, this all appears just as wishful thinking than an actual possibility. Especially since Del Toro himself acknowledges that Pacific Rim is a bit fantastical in comparison to the realism of Godzilla. But hey, one can always imagine the possibilities of a crossover, right?
Would you like to see a Pacific Rim and Godzilla crossover movie?
