The Teen Titans TV show that was rumored last year is still in development, at least according to TNT president Kevin Reilly. TVLine was at TNT’s Upfronts luncheon on Wednesday and asked Reilly about the status of the Teen Titans live action TV series. His answers were actually pretty exciting for fans of the Teen Titans comic books.

According to Reilly, they hope to lock down the casting for the Teen Titans TV show and start production on it. He said that they felt that the ideas behind Akiva Goldsman’s script was great and could make for a TV show that is not only “very true” to the source material, but also “groundbreaking” for comic book television.

“I sat down with Akiva and said — and he ultimately agreed — that the [TV] landscape right now is well-serviced on the superhero front. So what space is this going to inhabit?” Reilly related. “And really what he wants to do is be very true” to the source material.

The big difference between the Teen Titans that people love from the animated TV series and the original comics is that Dick Grayson will not be Robin in the Teen Titans live action series, but instead he will be Nightwing, which is a thousand times better character anyway.

Reilly also pointed out things that happened in the comics that will make the TV series groundbreaking, such as the moments where Speedy was the first superhero that was a drug addict and how it was a coming-of-age story for Dick, who felt betrayed by Batman.

It is unclear which members will be part of the Teen Titans. Speedy would be an interesting choice, but Roy Harper is currently part of the Arrow TV series on the CW. It is also unclear if DC Comics would allow them to use Cyborg, since the DC New 52 promoted him to the Justice League, where he will be part of the movie franchise. Kid Flash would be tough too since he has never been introduced on the CW series Flash.

Losing the comic dynamic between Cyborg and Beast Boy would be tragic, but if they are going for more groundbreaking work, maybe choosing someone like Wonder Girl and Speedy over the more comedy characters is the way to go.

There were rumors last year that the characters on the show will include Nightwing, Starfire, Raven, Oracle, and Hawk & Dove, but there is no telling who will be on the team until casting begins.

There is also no word if the Teen Titans live action TV show will be called Titans or Blackbirds, both names of which are in consideration. Who do you want to see as the characters in the Teen Titans live action TV series? Have any fan casting ideas? Let loose in the comment section below.
