Marvel and Sony have come to a decision about who will replace Marc Webb as the director of their new joint franchise. That man is someone who was already attached to the SpiderMan world anyway, as Drew Goddard has come aboard as the new Spider-Man director and writer for the new movie, set for a 2017 release.
** UPDATE: A representative for Drew Goddard denied these claims, although Marvel has a big announcement coming up later this week and more might be known by then. **
Original Story
Goddard was already signed to direct Sinister Six, the all-bad guy movie that Sony was planning way before DC Comics and Warner Bros. decided to do the same thing with their Suicide Squad movie. Goddard was also, at one time, attached to run the Daredevil Netflix TV show before pulling out to move on to Sinister Six.
This is a good move, as Goddard is a very geek friendly director, and his horror movie alongside Joss Whedon, Cabin in the Woods, was an amazing movie and speaks wonders for his vision. It is also nice to have that Joss Whedon connection, since Whedon will be leaving the Marvel director’s chair after Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The announcement also indicated that the title will be The Spectacular Spider-Man, which is just semantics and eventually will make talking about all the Spider-Man movies even more confusing. There is also word that they are now looking at an unknown for the role, which might rule out both Logan Lerman and Dylan O’Brien, who were originally rumored.
Finally, it looks like the release date has been made official, as Marvel and Sony will release the film on July 28, 2017 and might even feature other superheroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as Iron Man. Also, since Goddard has been working on Sinister Six for the last year, will they somehow play a role in the new movie?
Whatever the result, Drew Goddard is the new Spider-Man director and that is a very good thing.
