Wonder Woman Movie to be a 1920s Prequel

With all the Marvel movie news this week, it was easy for DC Comics upcoming slate of movies to get lost in the mire, and honestly, Marvel has been so successful that DC Comics has an uphill battle anyway when they start trying to match Marvel’s success level. With that said, there are still three characters that should do well regardless of anything else – Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.

The Trinity.

So, what do we know so far about Wonder Woman? Well, she will be the first female superhero to get her own movie, with Captain Marvel coming one year later for Marvel. Gal Gadot will first appear in Batman V Superman in the role (which is one year after Captain Marvel makes her first appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

DC Comics wants a female director to helm the movie.

With that information, Bleeding Cool just came up with a new scoop for the movie and this is a huge one. While Wonder Woman will appear in Batman V Superman and later in Justice League, her solo movie will be a prequel set in the 1920s and will pretty much be an origin story of Wonder Woman leaving Paradise Island.

The Wonder Woman movie sounds like it will follow the story most of us know pretty well. A man (Steve Tervor maybe?) arrives on Paradise Island, a land with only women who are battling for control of the island. Wonder Woman leaves with him and then explores the world. The twist here is that she is leaving a world where women rule and arriving in a world where women don’t even have the right to vote yet. That should be interesting.

There are also rumors that a Wonder Woman movie sequel will simply move on to the 1930s and 1940s during World War II and the women’s rights moment. Suddenly, Wonder Woman seems a lot less like a superhero movie and a lot more like a political movie about women’s rights. It also looks like we won’t get modern day Wonder Woman unless she appears in other character’s movies.

What is your thoughts? Is making Wonder Woman a completely different kind of comic book movie a smart move? Is this story something you would be interested in? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
