One thing that I thought was missing from the first season of the Arrow TV show was super-powered heroes and villains.
The series chose to go in a more realistic direction and used villains who were more on Oliver Queen’s level and had to use technology (or drugs) to up the danger level. Season two actually introduced some of the world of super-powered characters to the show, and I thought it was better for it.
I won’t get used to that.
According to executive producer Marc Guggenheim, superpowers are not going to play a role in Arrow, at least not in season three. This statement was an answer to the question about whether Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer was ever going to shrink down on the show and become The Atom.
“I think anything is possible,” Guggenheim said in the interview. “My instinct is that, if Ray Palmer is going to shrink, he’ll probably shrink on another show. With The Flash in existence, there’s no real compelling reason for us to do superpowers on Arrow. We can bring characters to The Flash, to have superpowers. We have plans for Ray that don’t involve shrinking, but our plans for Ray are actually really cool.”
So, what it sounds like Guggenheim is saying is that Ray Palmer could become The Atom, but that will be done on the Flash TV show, since that is a hero with superpowers, but Arrow will remain more realistic with the costumed vigilante theme. Sadly, that probably means The Suicide Squad won’t be making many appearances on Arrow, or if they do, it will just be non-powered villains.
I guess that gives fans on both sides of the fence something to look forward to, and it’s not like Arrow and Flash won’t crossover. There will be a big crossover this season between the two heroes, something that Guggenheim calls “awesome.”
“I’ve never had so much fun writing a script before, maybe in my life,” Guggenheim said. “It was such a blast to work on. We’re filming the Arrow episode right now, and it’s just so much fun. I keep telling everyone that we should try for Avengers.
It’s these two heroes together with a big production value. We’re blowing out the doors on this. There’s the opportunity for inside jokes, and seeing all of the characters together. What happens when Cisco gets his eyes on Thea?
There are moments like that, that you just can’t do in a normal episode. It’s just so much fun. It’s really going to be a blast. Jesse Warren is directing it, and he is just crushing it. Those dailies are really, really insane. Nick Tarabay plays Boomerang/Digger Harkness, and he’s amazing.
And that weapon is a whole new visual language in the show, and a whole new visual language for our stunt guys to work with. And watching Grant [Gustin] and Stephen [Amell] together is just magic.”
Well, hell, now I am excited just to see that crossover! What are your thoughts about the new season of Arrow? Are you disappointed to not see any superpowers on the show this season? Let’s talk Oliver Queen in the comment section below.
