WWE Summerslam 2014 will see Brock Lesnar getting his chance for the WWE world heavyweight championship against John Cena, with a possible chance to see the new title design as well. Also on tap is Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins, Bray Wyatt vs. Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton, and more.
Make sure to check back as we will refresh the WWE Summerslam recap and results as they happen.
Rob Van Dam vs. Cesaro – This match lasted a short time and was basically Cesaro continuously blocking RVD’s attempts at hitting the frog splash. The end came when Van Dam blocked a Neutralizer attempt and then hitting his five star frog splash to beat Cesaro cleanly. Winner: Rob Van Dam (**)
Hulk Hogan then comes out right before WWE Summerslam starts and pimps the WWE Network, reminding everyone that it only costs $9.99 a month and you get every pay-per-view through the Royal Rumble.
We get the opening of WWE Summerslam and its time to start, live from Los Angeles.
Intercontinental Championship: The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler – The Miz tries to get heel heat on his way to the ring but no one cares until he insults the Los Angeles Lakers. Michael Cole brought up the 1992 Intercontinental title match between Shawn Michaels and Rick Martel, where they promised not to hit each other in the face, comparing that to The Miz protecting his face. The ending of this match was amazing. Dolph went for the Fameasser but Miz somehow blocked on the way down, bounced back up and hit the Skull Crashing Finale. Ziggler then kicked out somehow. Miz couldn’t believe it. He went for the big boot, but Dolph ducked it and hit the Zig Zag and beat The Miz for the IC title. Winner: Dolph Ziggler (** 1/2)
Brie Bella is interviewed backstage and said she will take out Stephanie McMahon tonight because that is best for business.
Divas Championship: AJ Lee vs. Paige – Paige offers to shake hands before the match, but AJ Lee starts biting her hand and starts pulling her hair out. Awesome. This was a great, hard hitting match and is an example of what needs to happen for the Divas division to actually be taken seriously. Paige went for something, but AJ Lee reversed it into a Black Widow. However, Paige was able to reverse out of the Black Widow and hit the Rampaige (a tucked DDT) that knocked out AJ Lee and gave Paige the win and her second Divas title. Winner: Paige (** 1/2)
Next up is that Sting promo for the WWE 2K15 videogame.
Flag Match: Rusev w/ Lana vs. Jack Swagger w/ Zeb Colter – From the sound of it, this isn’t a real flag match where you have to capture your opponent’s flag. Lana cut her normal promo before the match started. Jack Swagger was then accompanied out by the Colored Guard carrying the colors of the United States. Rusev attacked Swagger before the match started but Swagger turned things around and locked in the Patriot Lock. That made the match a battle of Swagger’s injured ribs vs. Rusev’s injured ankle. The match was ok, but was really slow at points. Rusev won when Swagger passed out to the Accolade. After the match, Rusev even sucker kicked Colter, knocking him out as well. Then, based on the match stipulations, the Russian flag was raised and the Russian National Anthem was played. Winner: Rusev (* 1/2)
Lumberjack Match: Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins – Interestingly, early on, the lumberjacks are not showing favoritism for anyone, face or heel. There was an awesome move where Ambrose suplexed Rollins over the top rope and onto the floor, and onto the lumberjacks. Ambrose threw Rollins into the crowd, the lumberjacks threw Ambrose back into the ring, so Ambrose hit a suicide dive onto everyone and dived onto Rollins into the crowd. The fight then took place through the crowd while the lumberjacks stood at ringside. Kane then made his way out and ordered the lumberjacks to go into the crowd to get the wrestlers. The lumberjacks got Ambrose to drag him back but not Rollins. Seth Rollins tried to leave, but was blocked by the lumberjacks, who carried him back to the ring so Ambrose could hit a flying suicide dive onto everyone. These two have the fans eating out of their hands. They are LEGITIMATE stars. Ambrose hit Rollins’ finishing move (The Curb Stomp) and went for the pin but Kane ran in and hit Ambrose. Goldust ran in to stand up to Kane, but after Kane sucker punched Goldust, all the lumberjacks started brawling. That gave Rollins a chance to get the briefcase and lay out Ambrose with it for the win. Winner: Seth Rollins (****)
Bray Wyatt vs. Chris Jericho – Bray Wyatt is wearing an awesome leather butcher’s apron. This was a pretty solid match, and interestingly Bray Wyatt took the win cleanly despite not having the Wyatt Family at ringside with him. This probably means there will be a rubber match at Night of Champions. Winner: Bray Wyatt (** 1/2)
Stephanie McMahon vs. Brie Bella – Stephanie McMahon came to the ring dressed like a dominatrix. Wow. The fans are chanting “you still got it,” which I find ironically funny. Triple H came down when Brie Bella started to win, which brought out Nikki Bella. Brie then kicked Triple H in the face. Stephanie tried to get away but Nikki Bella attacked her sister and Stephanie won with the Pedigree. Winner: Stephanie McMahon (**)
Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton – These guys put on a decent match, especially considering the crap they have been getting for their house show matches (which I thought was pretty good when I saw them in Oklahoma City). There was a nice superplex by Orton from the very top buckle and then a Samoan Drop by Reigns from the top. There was another great move when Orton reversed the Reigns spear into a powerslam that was perfect and smooth. Reigns went for another Superman Punch later in the match and Orton hit a HUGE surprise RKO (Reigns kicked out). Those were two amazing defensive moves by Randy Orton. The end came when Orton went for the punt kick, Reigns swept out Orton’s leg and hit the spear for the win. Winner: Roman Reigns (***)
WWE World Championship: John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar – Cena still has the two belts, so it looks like they won’t unveil the new title belt until tomorrow. Also, it looks like Cena is in super serious mode. Lesnar hit the F5 VERY EARLY in the match, but Cena kicked out, making Brock smile. Lesnar then German Suplexed Cena ONTO HIS HEAD. Cena tries to fight back, but Lesnar no-sells everything and just beats the hell out of Cena. Lesnar’s entire offense for the first 10 minutes was nothing but punches, knees and German Suplexes. There is NOTHING pretty about this, but as a beat down, it is perfect. Cena finally hit the AA, but Brock kicked out. Lesnar then sat up, mocking The Undertaker. He then hit Eddie Guerrero’s Tres Guerrero’s twice. Out of nowhere, Cena locked in the STF but Lesnar countered out MMA style with blows. Lesnar then hit another F5 and pinned Cena clean. Brock Lesnar completely dominated John Cena in that match and it wasn’t even a competition. No one has ever dominated John Cena like that. It wasn’t a great match, but it was total, complete domination by Brock Lesnar. Winner: Brock Lesnar (***)
