With the critical success of Hannibal and Bates Motel, it seems like a good time to bring some classic horror movies to television as interconnecting series. The most recent addition to the slate is a Damien TV series, an upcoming series based on the classic Hellspawn movie The Omen.
If the only version of The Omen you have seen is the Liev Schrieber version from a few years back, you might not think this is a big deal. However, the original movie was a fantastic horror movie from the 70s, starring Gregory Peck as the father who learns that his son might be the Antichrist. That film was directed by none other than Richard Donner (Superman, The Goonies) and had two sequels that showed Damien growing into an adult, where he must face his destiny.
Damien: The Omen II followed Damien as a a teenager and Omen III: The Final Conflict sees Damien as a 32-year-old business man played by Sam Neill. The Damien TV series will follow Damien as an adult as he faces his quickly impending destiny. Damien died at the end of the third movie.
However, The Damien TV series will follow Damien as an adult as he faces his quickly impending destiny, so there is a pretty good chance this series ignores the sequels. While there is no word on the actual chronology, I expect Damien to pay homage to the first Omen movie and little else. In some great news, Glen Mazzara, the show runner for the second and third seasons of The Walking Dead, will write the series.
