Edgar Wright Leaves Marvel’s Ant-Man Movie

Edgar Wright

Ant-Man, Marvel

There is a lot of talk about how many bad decisions Warner Bros. and DC Comics make with their franchise. Well, Marvel made one perceived misstep of their own on Friday when they announced that they were parting ways with director Edgar Wright, who was supposed to direct their 2015 release of Ant-Man.

This is horrible news. Wright is one of the best, young visionary filmmakers working today. His movies have a distinct look and feel and he has a legion of fans waiting for his next movie. Now, the news comes that it won’t be a Marvel movie.

Marvel and Edgar Wright jointly announced today that the studio and director have parted ways on ANT-MAN due to differences in their vision of the film. The decision to move on is amicable and does not impact the release date on July 17, 2015. A new director will be announced shortly.

It is somewhat amazing that Marvel took a chance on a very risky director like James Gunn, who made what looks like a very different looking Marvel movie in Guardians of the Galaxy, but they couldn’t seem to work with Edgar Wright. Now, there is little doubt that Marvel won’t find someone good to fill the role as Ant-Man director, but Wright has been working on this movie since 2006.

That is a lot of  wasted time with a company who doesn’t trust the man’s vision. It seems weird since Kevin Feige at one time said that Edgar Wright’s work on Ant-Man helped form how the Marvel Cinematic Universe eventually formed. Now, the man who made a zombie movie so great that it even impressed George Romero can’t work his magic with Marvel. After eight years, what caused them to just now decide they weren’t on the same page?

At least comic book fans will always have Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. There is little doubt that Edgar Wright will make a fantastic movie in his next outing. It is just too bad that a studio that has taken so many chances is balking this time around. It just doesn’t make sense to me. What are your thoughts on the Ant-Man news? Let’s hear your opinion in the comments below.
