Noah crashed into theaters this weekend and flooded the weekend box office, conquering the new Arnold Schwarzenegger movie and taking the weekend crown.
Taking over the first place spot from Divergent, Noah made $44 million, just behind the opening numbers for the new 300 movie (which just crossed the $100 million mark this weekend itself). In some amazing news, this is the highest grossing opening weekend box office movie for Russell Crowe as a leading man and has already earned more money than Darren Aronofsky’s first four movies combined (Pi, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler).
It is also interesting to note that there are two faith based movies in the Top 10 this weekend, with God’s Not Dead coming in fifth with $9.1 million to build its total to $22 million. Add in Son of God earlier this year ($57.8 million) and it looks like religious movies are bringing in a lot of movie goers.
On the other end of the spectrum, Sabotage was the worst weekend box office opening for Arnold Schwarzenegger in almost 30 years. It made less than last year’s The Last Stand ($6.3 million) and is his worst debut since Red Sonja in 1985.
Meanwhile, Frozen just passed Toy Story 3 as the highest grossing animated movie of all time with $1.07 billion worldwide.
