‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ to be Biggest New York Movie Production Ever

In a recent press release by the Governor’s office in New York, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be the largest movie ever produced in New York.

For people who live in the state, the Marvel Comics franchise will create 3,500 jobs and 11,000 extras will be cast for the movie. One-third of the jobs and one-fourth of the extras will be from Long Island.

“There is no better place to film the next adventure of Peter Parker than right here in the Empire State,” Governor Cuomo said. “New York has the resources, talent and locations to help make ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ a blockbuster hit. This production will also help generate new jobs and economic activity both upstate and downstate which is great news for our local communities and fans of the franchise.”

According to Columbia TriStar, this is the first time an entire Spider-Man movie will be shot in New York. Marc Webb’s shot much of his first Amazing Spider-Man movie in Los Angeles. Sam Raimi shot his trilogy in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. The locations that Webb will shoot The Amazing Spider-Man 2 include Brooklyn, Long Island, Rochester and Manhattan.

New York began a large tax break for filmmaking in 2004 and that helped make this decision easier for Columbia TriStar. Since the tax credit took effect, the state leveraged $12.1 billion worth of spending in New York. The state earned an estimated $2.2 billion in spending in New York in 2012 alone.

In comparison, the state of Oklahoma cut out much of their tax credits for filmmakers, meaning that a 2012 movie about the Oklahoma City Thunder filmed most of its scenes in Louisiana, taking jobs away from numerous Oklahoma based workers and eliminating the chance for an added income boost for the state.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014.
