For those of you who loved last summer’s Pacific Rim may have some reason to rejoice. According to a recent interview with Legendary Picture CEO Thomas Tull, the studio is still open to the possibility of a sequel. While Tull did acknowledge the film’s disappointing box-office numbers in America, he was also quick to point out that it did much better overseas and has also been successful in home video and merchandising.
“We love being in business with Guillermo and frankly that movie, if you look it up, did I think more business than the first X-Men, did more than Batman Begins, our first movie, did more than Superman Returns, The Fast and the Furious, Star Trek,” Tull said. “So for a movie that was an original property that we made up it’s done really well. It did north of 400 million dollars globally and both the home video sales and the merchandise have way over-indexed, so it seems like fans really loved the world.”
Personally, I love the idea of a sequel. Pacific Rim was one of my favorite movies last year and I was shocked that it wasn’t talked about more while it was in theaters. If what Tull is saying is true though, I say better late than never. Pacific Rim is a film that begs for a sequel to be made (but not in the shameless sequel baiting way like the Resident Evil series).
Of course, since director Guillermo del Toro is currently hard at work with his next film Crimson Peak, I’m not exactly holding my breath about the sequel going into production anytime soon. Chances are the very earliest the sequel would be released around late 2017. That being said, it’s still nice to hear that a followup to one of my new favorite action films is still in the cards.
