‘Godzilla’ Begins Production and Adds Ken Watanabe to Cast

I find it incredibly awesome that within the next year or so, we will finally receive a  full fledge Godzilla film, produced by Frank Darabont. As I’m typing this report, production on the new 2014 blockbuster is officiallly rolling in Vancouver, Canada. That’s right folks… The big ass lizard has finally returned! In addition to the kick-off, Warner Brothers has announced the casting of Ken Watanabe (Batman Begins, Inception).

You may now applaud.

Watanabe will join a great casting ensemble, which includes Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Johnson, Juliette Binoche, and David Strathairn. Here is a statement from Warner Brothers:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today the final principal cast for the upcoming tent pole Godzilla. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, and Juliette Binoche are starring in the film, with David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston.

The companies also announced that principal photography began today on location in Vancouver.

Gareth Edwards is directing the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont, and Dave Callaham. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing with Mary Parent and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher are serving as executive producers alongside Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira.

A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, Godzilla will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd. Legendary Pictures is a division of Legendary Entertainment.

So far every decision made since the development of Godzilla, has caused me little concern for the project. Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) is a master cinematic storyteller. With him as an acting producer, I think this is going to end up as an enormous surprise next year. Until then, just keep Matthew Broderick as far away as possible.

Godzilla crashes into cinema screens May 16, 2014!
