Renegade Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up 02.09.2014

summer movies 2014

Well, it looks like Everything is Awesome for The Lego Movie, as it not only captured the hearts of critics and audiences, but it also captured the weekend box office crown on its opening weekend. The Lego Movie brought in $69.1 million, the second biggest opening weekend in February behind only The Passion of the Christ. It is also one of the best non-sequel animated openings ever behind only The Lorax and The Incredibles (unless you count The Simpsons Movie, which I don’t).

The other two wide openings had very different experiences from each other. While The Monuments Men was second to The Lego Movie, making $22.7 million, Vampire Academy finished seventh with a pretty bad $4.1 million. The Monuments Men opening was the highest ever for a George Clooney directed movie and falls in line with similar films like last year’s Captain Phillips ($25.7 million)

Check out our Vampire Academy review and Monuments Men review here. There will be reviews for The Lego Movie and Labor Day in the next day or two as well on Renegade Cinema.

Ride Along continued to perform well, passing $100 million with the weekend box office tabs (read our Ride Along review here), and Frozen continues to make money, reaching $368 million in the U.S. to move ahead of Despicable Me 2 for 2013 movies. It has also made close to $913 million worldwide and should hit the $1 billion mark before it bows out.
