A First Look At Robert Rodriguez’s ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ The Series

From Dusk Till Dawn TV

Robert Rodriguez is bringing his 1996 cult hit From Dusk Till Dawn to the small screen this March on his newly launched cable network El Rey. The movie brought to life the charismatic, yet deadly characters Seth and Richard Gecko, aka the Gecko Brothers; played by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino (who also co-wrote the endeavor). In a statement at the TCA press tour about the From Dusk Till Dawn TV series, Rodriguez said, “The film was the short story, this series is the novel,”  continuing with “We had a blast making this a rich experience that feels like it can go on and on for seasons.”

Hopefully the new series will have better luck than the majority of movies brought to television, such as Amazon’s attempt to bring ZombieLand to the boob tube, which was an abysmal failure, I attribute to trying to recapture the entire movie in one episode with lack luster dialog and poor casting. I think for From Dusk Till Dawn the series to succeed, it will have to beat a new path, breaking away from the movie, not rehashing it. Smartly done, it will take a page from the NBC show creators of Hannibal, who gave our favorite serial killer, Hannibal Lector, a new voice in Mads Mikkelsen. Doing nothing to emulate Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of the cannibal Doctor was a wise move, people want to see something new, or they tend to bore quickly. As a Robert Rodriguez fan, I have my fingers crossed that this show will surprise me.

The notorious Gecko Brothers will be played by young Actors D.J. Cotrona and Zane Holtz, pursued by Texas Ranger, Freddy Gonzales (Jesse Garcia). The From Dusk Till Dawn TV series will premiere March 11th on El Rey.
