J.J. Abrams has landed the coveted job as the director for the seventh installment in the Start Wars franchise, but before he got the job, plenty of people were speculating who would end up helming the film.

One of the biggest names that was thrown around by fans was the geek god Joss Whedon. However, since Whedon is already working on the S.H.I.E.L.D. tv series and the next Avengers film, he’s already much too busy. That being said, Whedon did admit that he would have loved to take on the job.

Even though he won’t be sitting in the director’s chair, that hasn’t stopped fans from wondering what could have been. Digital Spy got the chance to ask him what he would have done if he had been offered the job. One of their questions would be what he would do with fan favorite characters like Han Solo and Boba Fett. Whedon’s answer may surprise you.

“I wouldn’t go back. I’d go forward. I would want to create characters that would resonate the way that [the original trilogy’s characters] did. Not that I wouldn’t want to see them… I’d be excited to. But I also feel like I would want to explore a very different part of that universe.”

That means that we wouldn’t get to see Luke Skywalker, Leia, or Han Solo. Considering how iconic each of those three characters are, that is a very ballsy move. But of course, knowing Whedon, it’s probably better this way. Now we don’t have to see them die horribly on screen!

What do you think of this bit of information? Do you like the idea of Whedon replacing the original characters? Why don’t you just tell us what you think in the comments below?
