I don’t think anyone believed that X-Men: Days of Future Past was going to be made cheap. It’s easily the most ambitious X-Men film to date and naturally that amount of ambition will come with a pretty hefty price tag. However, I was very surprised to find out that according to Cinema Blend, the upcoming superhero flick will become the second most expensive film ever, trailing only James Cameron’s Avatar.
I find this rather surprising since I would think that Fox would want to reel in the spending on this a bit. If this were an Iron Man movie I would probably find this a little more understandable but the X-Men films haven’t nearly reached those kind of numbers. As a matter of fact, to date none of them have even made $500 million worldwide, so there’s really no way to justify a budget of that size especially considering the box office performance of Bryan Singer’s last movie Jack the Giant Slayer . Granted, the large all-star cast they assembled probably didn’t come cheap but that’s still not really enough to make it any more expensive than the other blockbusters.
Also, the reason Avatar was the most expensive movie ever made was because Cameron was doing things with movie technology that no one had ever done before. So this begs the question what exactly is Singer doing to make this one cost so much more than any other movie he’s ever done.
Of course, it hasn’t been confirmed whether or not this is true since the studio has continued to leave the official numbers of what they’ve spent under wraps.
Do you believe X-Men: Days of Future Past to be as expensive as they say? Does this make more or less excited for its release? Give us your thoughts in the comment section below.
