Highlander Reboot Has a New Director

There can be only one.

Actually, when it comes to the Highlander universe, there can be a lot. There can be a lot of actors (Christopher Lambert and Adrian Paul the most famous), there can be a lot of directors (Russell Mulcahy, Andrew Morahan, Douglas Aarniokoski and Brett Leonard all helmed a movie), and now they are rebooting it all over again.

This Highlander reboot was supposed to be directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious franchise) and Juan Carlos Fesnadillo (28 Weeks Later), but neither of them were fond worthy to be “the one.” Actually, Lin would have been awesome for the job, but he found other things to pass the time.

That brings us to the new man they have brought in to direct the new Highlander movie. His name is Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, and he is a first-time feature film director.

That doesn’t make me nervous about this or anything.

Anyway, before landing the Highlander reboot, Nicolas-Troyan worked on the crew of Snow White & The Huntsman and Maleficent and did visual effects work in the past on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as well as the American remake of The Ring.

I have no problem with a first-time director getting a gig like this, honestly. People will crap all over it anyway and it will give him a chance to show what he can do in front of a big audience and maybe lead him to bigger and better things down the line if he proves competent.

“For me, it all comes down to that first movie, but there are great themes in the show,” Nicolas-Troyan said. “It’s the rare cross-genre concept that has elements of the Western, time travel, fantasy, action, contemporary. There are universal themes, but of course you need to provide the answers like the first film did. Who are these guys with swords? Why are they fighting each other? What is the prize and how are they drawn to each other? There is far more at work here I want to explore than the lightning that happens during the Quickening.

Back then Christopher hadn’t done a lot of things and was just emerging, and Sean Connery, that movie brought about a real resurgence for him. We have to find that younger emerging guy, and surround him with a strong Kurgan, and an actor who shines as Ramirez the way Connery did in that film film.”

Plus he directed this amazing short film called Carrot vs. Ninja.
