The world was rocked today with the first glimpse of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and so far, the movie appears to be bringing some heavy emotional tone. That’s not all that we can expect this Summer though, because apparently the film is taking a peculiar direction with time travel that cinema hasn’t explored before.
“It’s about figuring your rules and sticking to them,” Singer explains. “The principle I looked at is this theory that until an object is observed, it hasn’t really happened yet. The time-traveller whose consciousness travels through time I call The Observer, and until The Observer returns to where he travelled from, the result hasn’t occurred yet. So he can muck about in the past and it isn’t until he snaps back that the new future is set. As a result, we’re able to have parallel action, and there’s an underlying tension because there’s always that threat Wolverine’s consciousness could return and leave the world in an even darker place.”
Sounds a bit complicated, but I’m interested to see how it all works on film. Singer also explains that as far as the period will be spending the most amount of time in, “The future’s about 25, 30 percent of the movie. The past is most of it.” Finally, he reveals that in the past (1973), the school has closed down for nearly decade, which we can assume this why the team has gone different paths, and why Xavier seems to be in a dark place.
One thing is for certain, if Days of Future Past delivers on its promise, this could end up as the best of the entire franchise. Here is to epic finales folks! X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theaters May 23rd, 2014!
