Ladies And Magic And Marvel Oh My!

Doctor Strange

I’ve talked before about how comic book movies (and megablockbusters in general) need more diversity. This is obviously true in the traditional sense. There aren’t enough women or people of color involved, and it makes me uncomfortable sometimes just how pervasive that is. There also needs to be diversity in the nature of the movies. We’ve seen super powers and sci-fi, but we’re gonna need more magic. I know there’s Thor but let’s leave that to the jury until Dark World. Kevin Feige at Marvel seems to agree with me on both fronts as he recently made very encouraging statements on Marvel’s progress towards a superhero film with a standalone heroine and a Doctor Strange movie!

With regards to the good Doctor Strange, Feige had this to say, “Doc Strange, as I’ve been saying for years, is a movie I believe we should make — we’re just figuring out how to make it a great movie. It is in active development right now[.]” He wouldn’t commit to a time frame, but at least it’s coming together.

In the discussion of female superheroes, Feige mentioned both Pepper Potts and Jane Foster as strong female characters the studio has already showcased. Fair point, but he did also mention that perhaps the heroine driven vehicle would be coming soon. “I know we have numerous exciting female heroes, whether none of them are currently slated, some of them are in development . . . We make two movies a year, we’ve planned through 2015 and we have some ideas of what we’re doing in 2016 and 2017, so we’ll see what happens.”

It’s not exactly a promise, but it does sound like the idea is floating around in the studio headquarters. That’s a good start. I hope it’s more than lip service because these movies could do a lot to promote the possibility of gender equality in areas that have historically been considered “boy stuff.” I’d like to see Marvel make moves to change that up.
