You done? Good. Well now that we’re all caught up let’s discuss the future of Gareth Evans’s fight movie masterpiece. The Indonesian action film features local police officers fighting against a criminal gang. The action takes place primarily in an apartment complex controlled by the bad guys.
As you know, having just watched it, this movie totally rules. Now we have a concrete hint about the upcoming sequel, The Raid 2: Berandal. The teaser image shows a few important things. First is Iko Uwais the hero and super fight star from the original film will be in the new one. He’s in the center of the picture so we can assume he’ll once again be the main character. Yayah Ruhian is also back. Excellent. Finally, we can see that there will be a girl with a hammer. Judging by Twitter’s reaction to the picture, this girl with the hammer is going to be a big deal.
Any hints about this movie will obviously get me excited. I love fight movies. I also love movies that do not try to add unnecessary complexity and just stand on their own artistic merit. The Raid definitely falls into that category. It’s a simple story with basic character beats, but the combination of quality performance, narrative clarity, and outstanding choreography combine to make this film something special. Hopefully the sequel will live up to the lofty standard set by the original. Having seen Evans’s other work (Merantau and the Safe House segment of V/H/S/2), I have all of the faith that Berandal will be spectacular.
