During a recent Stan Lee interview at the Wizard World Comic Con, the Marvel legend was talking about possible upcoming Marvel properties that might end up on the big screen. Lee said that Marvel was always looking at what might be best to come to the theaters next, including a mention of a Black Panther movie.
Here are his exact words:
“They’re fans of the stories and are trying to think, ‘What will the fans like to see next? What would we like to see next?’ So they’re working on Ant-Man, working on Doctor Strange; they’re working on Guardians of the Galaxy; they’re working on God knows what. Did I say the Black Panther also? They’re the ones I know about.”
We already knew about three of those. Guardians of the Galaxy is part of Phase 2 and will be the last movie before The Avengers 2 hits theaters in 2015. James Gunn is directing that movie based on the space faring heroes. Ant-Man is the first movie of Phase 3 and is directed by Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright. Doctor Strange is still a rumor, although enough has been learned that the property is almost assured. Strange is supposed to replace Iron Man as the new Marvel centerpiece.
That leaves the Black Panther movie as one that is brand new in this discussion. Black Panther is T’Challa, the king of the fictional land of Wakanda. In the comics, Wakanda is a very technically advanced land, and most of Panther’s adventures either take place in his land as he fights off rival political forces or in New York City, when he travels abroad. He is also a member of The Avengers.
