In some new Amazing Spider-Man 2 casting news, Colm Feore (Thor) has been cast to play the part of The Vulture. While this seems like one too many villains, it actually makes a lot of sense. The Vulture joins already cast villains Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and possibly Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper). Not only are those great actors, but they are also great villains.
Now, this news was broke by ComicBookMovie.com, but I discovered it through Screen Crave and was pretty insulted at the article they wrote about it there. Honestly, reading the article made me feel like the writer had never picked up a Spider-Man comic in his life (he calls Vulture “the old bald guy … who dress up like a bird” and refers to Giamatti’s character as a “bad guy called The Rhino” in a condescending manner).
Hell, if you watched the amazing animated cartoon Spectacular Spider-Man, you should know these characters.
And that is what I want to talk about here.
The Sinister Six was Spider-Man’s greatest enemies since his comic book first started. They first appeared in the very first Amazing Spider-Man annual in 1964, and included Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Electro, Kraven, Vulture and Mysterio. They remain an important part of his universe today, as one of the first groups of villains that the new Spider-Man (Doctor Octopus in Peter Parker’s body) faced was the new Sinister Six.
Rumor has it that these characters are leading to an ultimate team up in Amazing Spider-Man 3 as the Sinister Six.
However, I also think they are not going to put Norman Osborn in the Green Goblin costume to fight Spider-Man at that point. I think they are going to do what The Spectacular Spider-Man did. In that cartoon, Osborn was the man who was pulling the strings and creating these villains.
Honestly, while he did not actually insert the syringe into Curt Connors arm, Osborn was responsible for the creation of The Lizard. Maybe he had something to do with Electro, Rhino and Vulture gaining their powers as well. I think that Osborn might be building a team to battle Spider-Man, after the Wall Crawler gets in his way one too many times.
That is what I think this will work. If there is one ultimate bad guy (Osborn), and all the other super villains are his henchmen, this could be setting up a fantastic story. Of course, I liked the first movie too, so take my excitement with that in mind.
