War Machine is a solid part of the Iron Man franchise. James Rhodes is Tony Stark’s close friend and took on armor of his own in the last movie to help stop Iron Man from self destructing. It also looks like he will become the Iron Patriot in Iron Man 3. However, there are now rumors he might leave the Iron Man franchise for other properties.

Apparently, in the Iron Man 3 prologue, we learn where War Machine was when the aliens attacked in The Avengers. That is because people were curious as to why he didn’t fly in to help. Well, now it sounds like he might actually pop up in “The Avengers 2,” which would be good if Robert Downey Jr. (and maybe Iron Man himself) is leaving the Marvel movies for a while.

“I know that [there are] conversations that have been happening, so we’ll see what happens,” actor Don Cheadle said. “If that’s able to happen and it makes sense for the story, I’m sure it’ll happen, and if not it’s fine. It has to work within the world and sort of the mythology of the whole Marvel universe.”

Cheadle was also asked if he was appearing in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, since that is a political espionage thriller and he is a military man in the movies. He said that he is planning to go to the set and might bring his suit just in case. That was either a joke, or maybe a hint of things to come.

There is also the fact that, in the comics, he and Tony Stark had a falling out and War Machine is pretty much on his own there, so maybe a stand-alone movie could also be in his future.
