Aquaman is a joke to many people. Honestly, there is one reason that so many people like to make fun of Aquaman – the classic Super Friends cartoon. They made Aquaman look like a fool whose only power is to talk to fish. And then there is that costume. With the New DC 52, Geoff Johns has done a lot to right the wrongs done against Aquaman all these years and now Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder has joined in.

A Detroit radio station was making fun of Aquaman being part of the new DC Comics universe when someone called in to the show to defend Aquaman. That person was Zack Snyder and he made some fantastic points.

You guys were disparaging, a little bit, Aquaman…I don’t want to give anything away about the movie or anything like that but Aquaman has some cool abilities. People are like, “Oh what? Does he talk to animals? Cause that seems like what he does. Or fish?” The cool thing with Aquaman is his Trident. So you have to realize that could cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact. That’s a thing that’s in the canon. He’s super strong cause of course he can exist at these super deep depths so when he comes up here he’s crazy strong. Anyway, not to say he’s in my movie or anything like that but he has the potential to be bad ass, that’s all I’m saying.

Zack Snyder is 100 percent correct on this matter. I know a lot of people like to rip on the New DC 52, but I really don’t think those people have read the stories in the New DC 52. The Justice League stories especially have been fantastic (and I’ll be doing a run down of them when I finish the current run on Ex Machina in the weekly Renegade Rack column).

Anyway, Aquaman isn’t someone who can just talk to fish. He actually uses impulses to influence what animal life does. He is also pretty much bulletproof, has superhuman strength, is a natural born leader and war strategist, and is the freaking King of Atlantis. Anyone who says that Aquaman’s only power is talking to fish has never read an Aquaman book.

However, that will never stop a good punchline.
