Welcome to Week 2 of the RENEGADE REACTOR, where each week we will count down the Top 10 most anticipated movies based on the news, rumors and buzz that has circulated throughout the week. This is not the most anticipated movies that will come out two years from now, but the movies that have the best buzz right now.

10. Pacific Rim 2 (NR)

Guillermo Del Toro is not only making Pacific Rim 2 but is also shepherding an animated series about it. We’ll stick with it at 10 until we hear more, but this is very exciting news.

9. Overlook Hotel (NR)

I had very little interest in The Shining prequel when it was announced a while back, but something happened this week that has me excited. Warner Bros. has signed Mark Romanek to direct Overlook Hotel. While his name is not widely known, he is a very, very good music video director who has only directed three movies, but the last two were very good. The most recent was Never Let Me Go, one of the best sci-fi movies made in a while. This is a great choice.

8. Inherent Vice (9 ▲)

Seriously, last week I mentioned it didn’t take much for a Paul Thomas Anderson movie to remain on this list of my most anticipated movies. Inherent Vice is coming this Christmas, and The Hollywood Reported announced this week that the upcoming PT Anderson movie based on the amazing Thomas Pynchon novel will premiere at the New York Film Festival in October.

7. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2 ▼)

Robert Rodriguez is bringing his cast to Comic-Con 2014 and here is a brand new poster made just for the Comic-Con appearance:

6. Deep Blue Good Bye (NR)

When I was in college, one of my genre fiction classes had us read a bunch of genre novels covering just about everything. One of the novels we read was part of the John D. McDonald series about beach bun “salvage consultant” Travis McGee. Well, one of his novels is getting the big screen treatment and there is a lot of movement on it this week. First up, James Mangold will direct the movie before he attacks Wolverine 2, but the big news is that Christian Bale is possibly coming on to play Travis McGee. That is just brilliant casting.

5. The Expendables 3 (6 ▲)

These trailers have me really excited. Mel Gibson looks spot on as the bad guy and just seeing Wesley Snipes in an action movie again makes me happy. I also love how the trailer has Wesley Snipes character asked why he was locked away and he said “tex evasion.” This feature has me even more excited.

4. Tusk (NR)

There was some recent bad news when the Weinstein Company passed on financing Clerks 3. That was very disappointing for Kevin Smith fans, but things looked up a little bit this week when A24 announced that they are releasing Smith’s next movie, Tusk, on Sept. 19 of this year, a new addition to my most anticipated movies. While that is very short notice, it is pretty exciting for anyone following Smith’s horror movie about a man who is forced to dress up and act like a walrus. If this movie can succeed, maybe Smith can get financing for Clerks 3.

3. Avengers: Age of Ultron (7 ▲)

Despite not revealing it until recently, the cast of The Avengers will once again hit Comic-Con 2014 this week. Not only that, but there will be some exclusive footage screened. That will be cool, especially since there was some news this week about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. It is spoilerish, but Entertainment Weekly mentioned that both the siblings as well as The Vision are on Team Ultron, at least when the movie starts. There are also rumors that Avengers: Age of Ultron is Joss Whedon’s last Avengers movie and he will move on, leaving way for possibly Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn to step up for the third one.

2. Star Wars: Episode VII (5 ▲)

Last week, we were excited because of a mixture of Kevin Smith talking the movie up and Andy Serkis’ comments about playing in the movie. This week, it was Latino Review that posted a bunch of rumors about what Star Wars Episode VII was going to be about. Honestly, the best of the rumors was that one of the heroes of the story is a Stormtrooper (John Boyega) gone AWOL because that is very different and kind of cool. Either way, these are the kind of leaks that will keep Star Wars: Episode VII high of my list each week.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy (1)

It appears that the excitement for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is growing. Renegade Cinema offered fans in Oklahoma City the chance to see the movie free before it hits theaters and ended up with almost 200 people vying for 50 pairs of passes proves it is one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. If Oklahoma City is that excited, imagine the rest of the world. Next Tuesday, I get to see Guardians of the Galaxy and it can’t come soon enough.
