Anticipation is gearing up for the third installment of the Iron Man franchise, which will be debuting in just under a month from this weekend. There are some very high hopes set up for Iron Man 3. This will be the first Marvel movie since last summer’s mega-hit, The Avengers, and the first installment in Marvel’s “Phase 2” plan, which will eventually lead up to The Avengers 2, which will be written and directed by Joss Whedon who directed the first Avengers film.

The third Iron Man film will be directed by Shane Black, the writer of the first Lethal Weapon film and the writer/director of Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. We’ve already seen some very intriguing trailers for the film, but the most intriguing thing yet may be Joss Whedon’s reaction to the film. Since he is the “Tom Hagen” – as he calls his role – of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has to make sure all the dots line up for the next films leading up to the second Avengers movie. In an interview, Kevin Feige actually said that after seeing Iron Man 3’s climax, Whedon said this:

“Now what am I supposed to do now? What am I going to do in Avengers 2?”

It sounds like Whedon was actually blown away by the ending to the film, and even feels intimidated. If this is the case, then it looks like we have something very special to look forward to with Iron Man 3; and knowing Whedon, he’ll have to whip up something even better to top it.

It is incredibly rare for a third installment to fire on all cylinders. If early buzz is any indication, Iron Man 3 may become the yard stick that every other franchise film will measure up to. I certainly hope that’s the case.

Same here. Shane Black’s addition has be excited. Honestly, if this was Jon Favreau part 3, I would not be as excited.

Jon Favreau contributed a great deal to the first two Iron Man films in that they were fun, humourous and action-packed. Iron Man 2 could have been so much more; I feel like the script needed to go through one more draft before the cameras started rolling. Fortunately, Shane Black has the chops to respect what came before and take all of these characters to an exciting level, so I’m looking forward to this one all the way.

I have a feeling we might see the “Empire Strikes Back” of the Iron Man franchise in this upcoming film.

With Shane Black, I can really see that.
