Warner Brothers has been trying to get an AKIRA remake off the ground for quite sometime, and it appears that they’re closer now than ever.  Most recently they had Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) attached to direct with a cast that included Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Helena Bonham Carter, and Ken Watanabe. The director had even cut the budget in half, to a manage $90 million, as former director Albert Hughes had it pegged at a cool $180.

Collect-Serra actually left the project at one point due to things taking so long to get going, but apparently he’s back in the saddle, as Warner Brothers appear to be very keen on the man and what his vision for AKIRA seems to be. They plan to have him start on it in the spring of 2014, but no word on who, if anyone, from the previously mentioned names are returning.

Me, personally, I have absolutely no interest in Anime myself, but I do hope this AKIRA remake is good news for all those out there who are. Nothing worse than when a studio messes with your favorite franchise.
